5 Essential Commands Every Dog Should Know

Training your dog is one of the most rewarding experiences you can share together. Whether you have a new puppy or an older dog, teaching basic commands creates a foundation for good behavior, safety, and a stronger bond between you and your furry friend.

At Avant Garde K9, we believe every dog should master these 5 essential commands. Here's why they matter and how to teach them effectively.

1. Sit

Why it's important: Sit is often the first command dogs learn because it's simple and useful in many situations. It helps calm an excited dog, prevents jumping on guests, and is the foundation for other commands.

How to teach it: Hold a treat close to your dog's nose, then slowly move your hand up. As their head follows the treat, their bottom will naturally lower to the ground. Once they're sitting, say "Sit," give them the treat, and share affection. Repeat this several times daily until they master it.

2. Stay

Why it's important: Stay teaches impulse control and keeps your dog safe in potentially dangerous situations, like near a busy street or when the door is open.

How to teach it: Ask your dog to sit, then open your palm in front of you and say "Stay." Take a few steps back. If they stay, reward them with a treat and praise. Gradually increase the distance and duration before rewarding them.

3. Come

Why it's important: A reliable recall command can be a lifesaver. Whether your dog slips their leash or is heading toward danger, "Come" brings them back to safety.

How to teach it: Put a leash and collar on your dog, get down to their level, and say "Come" while gently pulling on the leash. When they come to you, reward them with affection and a treat. Practice in a safe, enclosed area, then gradually work in more distracting environments.

4. Down

Why it's important: Down is useful for calming an excited dog and is more submissive than sit, which helps reinforce your role as the leader.

How to teach it: Hold a treat in your closed fist and hold it up to your dog's nose. When they sniff it, move your hand to the floor so they follow. Slide your hand along the ground to encourage their body to follow their head. Once they're in the down position, say "Down," give them the treat, and show affection.

5. Leave It

Why it's important: Leave It can prevent your dog from eating something harmful, picking up dangerous objects, or bothering other animals or people.

How to teach it: Place a treat in both hands. Show them one closed fist with the treat inside and say "Leave it." Ignore their attempts to get it (licking, pawing, sniffing). Once they stop trying, give them the treat from the other hand. Repeat until they move away from the first fist when you say "Leave it."

Final Tips for Success

Training takes patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Keep training sessions short (5-10 minutes), always end on a positive note, and practice daily. Every dog learns at their own pace, so celebrate small victories along the way.
